London-based saxophonist and composer, Nubya Garcia, is one of the leading forces behind the resurgence of jazz-influenced sounds in the UK and across the globe. Her appearance at the Cellar Door as part of our Vivid Sydney 2018 program is set to be one of the shows of the year, hands down. If there was ever an artist to best personify our monthly event Jazz! Attack!...then Nubya is it!

Raised in a creative environment built by a set of Caribbean parents, her brand of afro-tinged jazz has made her a key component in a string of new and established groups; from work with legendary jungle producer and toaster, Congo Natty, through to her own works as part of the Theon Cross Trio, six-piece Maisha, and the Nérija septet.

Spring 2017 saw her release her first solo project via forward-thinking imprint, Jazz re:freshed. The project — which explores the common ground between progressive jazz, hip hop and soulful, groove led rhythms — cemented her credentials on the global jazz scene.

Nubya will be joined by Midnight Swim label boss Tom Studdy amongst a number of fresh emerging talent from the Sydney contemporary jazz movement

A newly released art-house documentary film by Fabrice Bourgelle and Giles Peterson's globally recognized record label, Brownswood, spotlighting the music and players of the current London jazz scene.

The screening will be hosted by Tom Studdy of Midnight Swim and monthly Jazz night Jazz! Attack! created in collaboration with Glen Cassidy (Cake Wines).

We Out Here isn’t just a film about the renaissance of jazz in London over the past few years, in as much as it is also about friendship and community and the influences of city that these young musicians call home.

It is the journey of a certain group of young gifted players among many, who have trained and come up together, and whose sounds are now becoming an integral part of our musical landscape, as well as representing the sound of London beyond the confines of the city.

In a city brimming with creative energy, invention and a never say die approach to making stuff, it's no wonder there is an emerging pool of artists out there on their own, pushing the envelope towards new ground....the outliers of the music world. We're excited to showcase a handful of those artists for Vivid Sydney 2018, in our first edition of Outliers, drawing on the international presence of Rhythm Section signed Al Dobson Jr, in an evening of music that will shine a light on some of the true pioneers of jazz, house, world and everything in between. Line-up: Al Dobson Jr, Tom Suddy, Jackson, DJ Majy Bajy + plus more to be announced.

Pét Sounds is a celebration of pét-nat wines and the Beach Boys; a collaboration with Melbourne's favourite neighbourhood wine store, Blackhearts & Sparrows, held down at our Redfern Cellar Door. It's arguably the highlight of our Vivid Sydney calendar. Expect 30 handpicked — and unexpected — pét-nats sourced from near and far, alongside two Beach Boys-inspired sets from none other than Jonti + friends (interstitial DJs to be announced). In addition to the pét-nats available, Blackhearts & Sparrows will be curating an exciting list of local wines and beers.
