Unearth the mysterious world of mushrooms with Mycelium Network, a living, breathing web of light. Did you know that mushrooms talk to each other, via an underground information highway? Well, technically, they’re talking to themselves.
Nearby shrooms are often from the same mycelium — a living root-like network of fungal strands that absorbs energy and shares information about disease not only with itself but trees and other plants. (Here’s a fun, slightly overwhelming fact. While mycelium can be microscopic, the largest organism in the world is the “humongous fungus”, a mycelium in Oregon, USA. It covers 2,385 acres, weighs more than 35,000 tons and is more than 8,500 years old!)
Mycelium Network brings this mushroom magic to the surface, as UK artist Stevie Thompson recreates these intricate worlds with a glowing, custom-made fibre-optic network between the trees of Barangaroo Reserve.
Pulsing with light, signals and nutrients, these mesmerising bioluminescent roots reveal how a whole ecosystem thrives underneath our feet— even if we can’t usually see it.
