With special guest RIAH.

A force to be reckoned with, the Nairobi-born, Adelaide-raised rapper Elsy Wameyo brings her arresting blend of modern alt-R&B, soul and traditional African instrumentation to the White Bay Power Station, joined by West Sydney R&B rising star RIAH.

Part of Biennale of Sydney's Art After Dark series, it's one of three Friday nights of innovative, left-of-centre music among the ongoing Biennale exhibition and outdoor food offerings, presented by Vivid Sydney.

Elsy Wameyo’s music is an impassioned self-portrait, with the Kenyan-Australian exploring identity, faith and endurance in a rich sonic landscape of meticulous beats, honeyed harmonies and hard-hitting bars.

After debuting in the late 2010s with a series of attention-grabbing singles – including ‘Outcast’, a raw examination of racism and growing up as African in Australia – Wameyo has gone from strength to strength.

Her self-produced 2022 EP Nilotic was a seamless fusion of hip hop, alt-R&B and soul – a sound expanded upon in the assured debut album Saint Sinner, and last year’s AIR Award-nominated EP Wameyo.

Plus, RIAH warms things up with her velvety vocals, weaving stories of identity, connection and growth, shaped by her Tongan, Fijian, Aboriginal and Italian Heritage.

After more Art After Dark gigs? Vivid Sydney also presents New York ambient techno trio Purelink on Friday 29 May, and a free multi-stage party on Friday 12 June, featuring international and Australian innovators.
