VIVID SUPPORTER SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE
From 27 May – 13 June, Vivid LIVE at Sydney Opera House will welcome some of the most ambitious and innovative local and international artists for an 18-day takeover of contemporary music on the nation's most famous stages - as part of Vivid Sydney, the world's largest festival of light, music and ideas.
Now in its eighth year, Vivid LIVE invites the world’s leading music artists and performers to raise the roof of the Sydney Opera House's theatres, rehearsal spaces, recording studios and most famously, its iconic sails, which are transformed into a unique lighting canvas each year for Vivid Sydney.
In 2016, Sydney Opera House will transform into an animated canvas that celebrates First Nations' spirituality and culture through the Songline of our land and sky, this year’s Lighting the Sails is about painting and celebrating country through a pattern of sharing systems, interconnected history lines and trade routes.
Lighting the Sails Director, and Head of Indigenous Programming at Sydney Opera House Rhoda Roberts has selected six artists of different clans, national estates and territories for an immersive projected artwork that weaves through time and distance. ‘Songlines’ incorporates the work of artists Karla Dickens, Djon Mundine, Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi, Reko Rennie, Donny Woolagoodja, and the late Gulumbu Yunupingu.
As the first Aboriginal work commissioned exclusively for the sails of the Sydney Opera House, this visual tapestry will weave through personal journeys, while celebrating the timeless themes and enduring art of Australia's most influential contemporary first nations artists, exclusive to Vivid Sydney.
During Vivid Sydney, the Opera House will also offer a range of family-friendly entertainment experiences including Dress Up Attack! programmed for children aged 2-8 and all parents and carers as part of Vivid LIVE, along with Vivid-inspired menus, pop-up bars and cafes. In addition to the seasonal food and drink offered year round, this year’s focus will be on celebrating our nation’s culinary heritage, offering a range of locally sourced Australian produce.
Exclusively for Vivid Sydney, the Sydney Opera House Tour will extend its hours to offer visitors the perfect starting point to begin their Vivid Sydney experience. Guests will visit the Opera House’s famous theatres and foyers to collect unique insight into the history of the festival and the famous light displays that illuminate the sails in spectacular fashion every year. The extended hours of the Sydney Opera House Tour are available in English (daily), Japanese (Tuesday and Thursday) and Mandarin (Monday, Wednesday, Friday). Festival goers can also venture backstage at the Opera House every evening on the Backstage Tour. Usually reserved for early mornings when the Opera House is just waking up, the Backstage Tour will now run in the evening during Vivid, allowing you to witness the buzzing Opera House as stages, sets and performance spaces come to life for Vivid LIVE music acts before finishing up with dinner and drinks in the Opera House Green Room – the exclusive domain of the staff and performers who call this remarkable building home.
