One of the wildest, most unpredictable and sonically thrilling acts to emerge from the Brooklyn art-punk movement of the early 2000s, Liars – lead by Australian-born songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Angus Andrew – refused to be boxed in by a scene, shape-shifting between pummeling, guitar-driven rock, electronic experimentalism and seemingly everything in between. Hot off the accolades for their latest album, Liars are bringing their one-of-kind sonic collage to Vivid LIVE for a one-night-only performance in The Studio.
The band broke out with their dance-punk adjacent smash They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top before moving into a space all their own, roaming across freaked-out electronics, industrial drone, witch fables and drum epics. Their most recent album, 2021’s The Apple Drop, was hailed by critics as one of their most accessible yet – a collaborative project that blurred the boundaries between an archetypal band structure and experimental electronics, with hooks to spare.
Joining Liars will be special guests The Double, a band that brings together two indie rock heavyweights: Jim White, Vivid LIVE legend and drummer for the one and only Dirty Three, and Emmett Kelly, guitarist for The Cairo Gang and a frequent collaborator with Will Oldham and Ty Seagall. The Los Angeles Times dubbed the duo’s 40-minute debut single 'Dawn of the Double' (2016) a singular recording, and wondered “Is it a parody of a rock song or the greatest jam ever put to tape?”
Either way, brace yourself: this will be one of the most exhilarating shows of the festival.
