Event Details

As the leader of Melbourne's DIY punk trio Camp Cope, singer and guitarist Georgia Maq became something of a local hero, calling out music industry sexism over fearsome indie rock salvos while garnering widespread international acclaim.

In late 2019, Maq surprised everyone by releasing her solo debut, Pleaser, a bright, catchy and revelatory missive of electro-pop tunes about heartbreak and love. Describing the album as “Paul Westerberg meets Robyn”, Maq drew on her punk energy and love of pop artists like Carly Rae Jepsen, Lorde, Charli XCX and Cardi B to craft an immaculate collection of synth pop that drew strength from vulnerability. The shimmering pop continued on her 2021 singles ‘Someone Stranger’, a dancefloor collaboration with electronic producer Alice Ivy that The Guardian called “the type of once-a-decade song that makes millions spin alone in empty rooms, eyes closed, necks arched”; and ‘Joe Rogan’, a cheeky, bustling synth jam exploring the dating world.

This is Maq’s long-awaited, twice-delayed solo debut at the Sydney Opera House, following Camp Cope’s rousing headline performance in 2019, and the band’s sold-out, back-to-back shows at Vivid LIVE in 2017. Maq will perform in the Utzon Room for one night only, bringing her synth pop era to glimmering, spectacular life.
