The Flying Nun Presents: Alter Native
East Sydney Community Centre
34 Burton St
What happens when two bands Deprogram and Hoax Trinket fuse their creativity with video artist dvd2u and two computer programmers? Together they become a multi-tentacled device ready to tackle diverse performance possibilities from pub rock to art installations. Not all at the same time.
In Alter Native, multiple projectors play out imagery on structures to create an other-worldly environment while live music creates equally suggestive soundscapes. Think Pippilotti Rist without found images.
Alter Native is part of the The Flying Nun showcase celebrating performing arts residencies with Brand X at the East Sydney Community and Arts Centre. By its very nature, the program celebrates the fringe, alternative and contemporary counter-culture, contributing multi-disciplinary creative risk-taking to the East Sydney creative precinct. Come and be the first audience to witness new work fresh out of the rehearsal room and by doing so, support independent artists with income and feedback to propel the work on to stages across Sydney.
Deprogram, Hoax Trinket and dvd2u
They are a multi tentacled device, three bands (Deprogram/Hoax Trinket), a video artist (dvd2u), 2 computer programmers. They tackle a variety of performance possibilities from pub rock to art installations. Not all at the same time.
Cultural icons Jay Katz and Miss Death are dedicated to the best cult movies, strange music, and underground art in Sydney.
Sean Maroney and Julia Christensen
Sean works (often under the company 'Sexually Transmitted Politics') in interdisciplinary nonsense and absurdity. It's often a bit poetry and it's always performative. He has written and directed three plays that go span improvisatory performance, hyper-meta spectacle, and conventional drama. He has performed as a performance artist at Splendour in the Grass, Secret Garden, and in Sydney Fringe. His material is always collaborative, creative, never innovative, and always crafty.
Norm De Plume and JP Ducharne
Inspired by The Loft and Beauty & The Beat: Peaches & Prunes started in February 2018 as a series of private dance parties in an inner-west warehouse. Norm De Plume and JP Ducharne (founders and residents) carefully curate eclectic DJ sets with an emphasis on disco and deep house. They only play vinyl through their audiophile sound-system, the depth and clarity of which creates an immersive experience. They strive for inclusivity and a community feel on their dance floor. Norm De Plume is an internationally recognised DJ and Producer from London. JP Ducharne co-hosts Classic Album Sundays in Sydney.
