Event Details

Be transported to an unearthly realm. This fully improvised, multi-channel performance presents a ‘machine-learning’ reimagining of traditional Gothic music and visuals that evokes sacred, soulful spaces.

Picture the faceted glory of stained glass windows. Now, imagine if those windows in churches and cathedrals could stare back at the souls of the faithful. What would they see? Psychiatrist and author Elisabeth Kübler-Ross likened people to stained glass windows, saying ‘we sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, our true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within’.

By merging High-Gothic vocal music samples with A.I. produced sounds ‘trained’ on the same recordings, artist and composer Ryan Walsh blurs the traditional and the futuristic in the creation of a new, ‘unheard’ music.

Beyond soul-stirring music, be mesmerised as a kaleidoscope of light and colour floods the space. Free-hanging LCD panels draw your eyes toward the heavens. Backlit to mimic illumination by sunlight, they display Ryan’s ever-changing patterns generated by ‘machine-learned’ interpretations of Gothic stained glass panels to create a dynamic triptych.
