Event Details

Few bands move between subdued, dreamy soundscapes and skyscraper-shattering noise quite like Japanese trio BORIS, the doom rock legends who’ve been bending sound since they formed in Tokyo back in 1992. After 30 years and more than 20 wildly eclectic studio albums, the experimental noise heroes have lost none of their vision and sonic power. Now, for the first time since they shook the Sydney Opera House for Vivid LIVE back in 2010, Boris returns for a performance in The Studio to mark their 30th anniversary, playing their fearsome fan favourite Heavy Rocks (2002) with special guest bassist TOKIE.

Named for a song by grunge icons the Melvins, Boris – vocalist and bassist Takeshi, lead guitarist and vocalist Wata, and drummer Atsuo – became cult favourites in the ’90s for their conceptually ambitious, experimental drone rock, a sound that often drew from psychedelia, punk, noise, sludge and doom metal. Their records include towering 70-minute song suites (2000’s Flood), melodic noise rock classics (2005’s Pink) and wistful dream pop (2011’s New Album), and they’ve collaborated with noise legend Merzbow and metal wizards Sunn O))).

The band’s recently-released new album, W, a companion piece to their epic NO (2020) balances dream pop and drone to immersive, holistic effect. W also features the furious bass playing of veteran Japanese guitarist TOKIE, who’ll be joining Boris for their Vivid LIVE show.

A performance that’s guaranteed to be one of a kind.
