Event Details

Cut through the noise surrounding AI’s impact on creativity with design and innovation expert and Professor Joshua Vermillion, in a provocative keynote presentation at the State Library of NSW that completely rethinks the future of design.

Exclusive to Vivid Sydney, the American architect, designer and researcher will reframe the conversation away from a human-verses-AI struggle, outlining a vibrant future where machines aren’t tools, but true creative partners.

Drawing on his academic research as well as his creative practice with intelligent technology for publications such as Architectural Digest and Harper’s BAZAAR, Vermillion will outline how emerging technologies are already reshaping the way we imagine, design and build our world.

Expect a visually rich journey through the growing role of robotics, artificial intelligence and machine learning in architecture and design, as Vermillion explores contemporary experimental projects, speculative design research and real-world examples.

From algorithmic design systems to robotic fabrication and AI-driven workflows, learn how designers can engage critically and creatively with intelligent technologies – and how these tools are opening new possibilities for innovation, ethics and expression.

Challenging foundational ideas of artistry, craft and authorship, Vermillion’s sits at the cutting-edge of creativity, technology and innovation. With unique, vital insights that cross academia and artistry, Creative Machines is essential for designers, architects and all forward-thinkers.

This event is presented in partnership with State Library of New South Wales.

Experienced Auslan theatre interpreters stand to the side of the stage and translate what the speakers are saying or Auslan signing the text and dialogue live. Audiences requiring this service are seated in the section closest to the interpreter to ensure good sightlines.
  • Companion Card Acceptance Companion Card Acceptance - The Companion Card is for people with a significant permanent disability, who always need a companion to provide attendant care type support in order to participate at most available community venues and activities.
  • Hearing Loop Hearing Loop - A hearing loop (sometimes called an audio induction loop) is a special type of sound system for use by people with hearing aids. The hearing loop provides a magnetic, wireless signal that is picked up by the hearing aid when it is set to 'T' (Telecoil) setting. Many venues have an induction hearing loop system. Check if your venue has this system.
  • Wheelchair Accessible Wheelchair Accessible - Access to the venue is suitable for wheelchairs (toilets, ramps/lifts etc.) and designated wheelchair spaces are available.
