Daring… Beguiling… Unrelenting… Our gaze is captivated by a dancer’s feet. Tightly strapped in bejewelled stilettos, they stomp and splash in puddles of silver paint. In Smash, provocative visual artist Marilyn Minter shatters illusions of glamour.

Marilyn’s work upends stereotypes of the female body ingrained in popular culture. She gets almost uncomfortably close to her subjects, revealing them in extreme close-ups where we start to see flaws and cracks in the polished surface. Smash is just one of her powerful critiques of the seeming perfection of fashion advertisements, where reality intrudes on airbrushed perfection. Emblematic of seismic change, the 2014 video is presented at an arresting scale.

Smash responds to Vivid Sydney’s 2022 creative direction – ‘the soul of our city’ – both conceptually and literally. As a play on words, this bedazzled ‘sole’ can be seen as a catalyst for change; challenging notions of female beauty, breaking glass ceilings and smashing the patriarchy! Stand up and bare your soul.” – Presenters, Creative Road Art Projects
