Leila Jeffreys and Melvin J. Montalban are contemporary Australian artists who create multi-media installations. They combine large-scale sculptural elements with meditative, projections featuring Australian birdlife. For the pair, birds are both the medium and message, allowing them to spotlight our connection to the natural world. Nest is Jeffreys and Montalban’s fourth collaboration. Their previous work, Temple, was commissioned for Vivid Sydney 2022 and exhibited at the National Film and Sound Archive.

The dance of the Brolgas surrounds us, as their graceful movement plays out like the unfurling of a ribbon.

An expansive circular structure welcomes you to bear witness to the ritualistic mating dance of the Brolga, one of only two species of crane native to Australia.

Projected onto a transparent surface, the huge bird apparitions appear to float in the air and are visible from both out and inside the Nest.

Lose yourself in the movement of these hypnotic, larger-than-life cranes, as you reflect on our deep connection to nature and the creatures within it. Let your imagination take flight, with your feet firmly planted to the ground.
