Tunnels are portals to other worlds. We venture into the darkness never entirely sure what we'll encounter and often never knowing what awaits on the other side. This year, the unused Goods Line tunnel – a space that is largely unknown and alien to even the most well-travelled Sydneysider – becomes a portal to a spectacular convergence of lights, lasers and smoke effects that will leave guests wondering where the tunnel leads and what they'll discover as they journey deeper underground.

See this nearly forgotten landmark transformed by a spectacular, immersive visual experience. As the largest scale laser installation in Vivid Sydney history, Mandylights has used over one hundred custom-made laser units to produce a near-infinite array of dispersed beams that will entirely fill the Goods Line tunnel. The rotation and evolution of this unique light show constantly changes the appearance of the space as beams are caught in clouds of drifting haze or as they illuminate the blackened walls of the old railway tunnel.

Be drawn toward a central, mysterious cone of intense light that radiates from a hidden point over one hundred metres into the tunnel. Is this the metaphorical light at the end of the tunnel? Is it a throwback to the industrial mega-machines that used to thunder through the space in a bygone era? Or is it a high-tech evolution of yet another inner-city space that gives even the darkest alleyways, tunnels and abandoned spaces hope for a new lease of life? Step inside to find out.
