VOUW

VOUW is an Amsterdam-based design studio founded by Mingus Vogel and Justus Bruns in 2018. VOUW is a pioneer in 'slow-tech' design, which is the idea that technology is not solely a means of efficiency and productivity. Their designs are guided by the principle that technology can help us slow down and reconnect with ourselves and our surroundings. They have won multiple awards for their most recent work Bloomlight, including a Archiproducts Design Award, LIT Lighting Design Award and a Good Design Award.

Music Composer: Ertan Çetin

With their ongoing global City Gazing series, VOUW recreates a view that very few humans would normally see with their own eyes: the Earth from space. At night, astronauts see cities as glowing arteries, the shining outline inspiring both awe at humanity's might and our meekness.

In this edition, the work imagines looking down on Sydney from the stars over the last 100 years, as a map floating above our heads lights up to chart the city's growth across the past century. Watch as Sydney expands, and time-travel to some of the key historic moments that shaped the city with an accompanying soundscape.

Following previous City Gazing installations in Singapore, Beijing, Amsterdam, Riyadh and Kaohsiung, this Sydney edition invites us to see our city as singular yet interconnected, one part of a much larger story.

Country represented by installation: The Netherlands
