Montaigne

Montaigne

Following the release of EP The Life Of Montaigne and then debut album Glorious Heights (2016), Montaigne’s evolution as an artist was a journey fans became part of, as they were able to witness their growth as a musician and performer on stages nationally. 2019 saw the arrival of their sophomore album, a collection of observations and stories beautifully delivered against a backdrop of sprawling and theatrical sounds, fittingly titled Complex. 2020 brought another pivotal moment for Montaigne, as they were selected to represent Australia at Eurovision in Rotterdam 2020, before returning in 2021. In 2022, they released eclectic third album making it!, an alt-pop journey through sugary, metallic production featuring two collaborations with David Byrne.

Etcetera Etcetera

Etcetera Etcetera is one of Australia’s most well-known and visually striking drag artists. With a rich background in performance, makeup artistry, screen studies and fashion, they have appeared on stages from Australia to New York and back again.

A visible non-binary artist, their activism has created a genuine and vocal fanbase - beyond the world of drag and into the mainstream. Etcetera creates memorable moments in theatre, nightclubs, television, film & online. Just as their name suggests, there’s only more to come.

Access and Inclusion

  • Auslan Interpreted - Auslan interpreted events are for audiences who are Deaf and use Australian Sign Language (Auslan) as their primary means of communication. Experienced Auslan theatre interpreters stand to the side of the stage and translate what the speakers are saying or Auslan signing the text and dialogue live. Audiences requiring this service are seated in the section closest to the interpreter to ensure good sightlines.
  • Companion Card Acceptance - The Companion Card is for people with a significant permanent disability, who always need a companion to provide attendant care type support in order to participate at most available community venues and activities.
  • Hearing Loop - A hearing loop (sometimes called an audio induction loop) is a special type of sound system for use by people with hearing aids. The hearing loop provides a magnetic, wireless signal that is picked up by the hearing aid when it is set to 'T' (Telecoil) setting. Many venues have an induction hearing loop system. Check if your venue has this system.
  • Wheelchair Accessible - Access to the venue is suitable for wheelchairs (toilets, ramps/lifts etc.) and designated wheelchair spaces are available.

Event Details

Question everything with Queeries, a night of literature, stand-up, performance, and everything in-between from eight Australian and New Zealand LGBTIQ+ writers, comedians and artists.

Expect a playful mixture of memoir, fiction, poetry and more, as these artists explore and challenge the idea of what it means to live and be 'natural', inspired by this year's Vivid Sydney theme, 'Naturally'.

First held in 2021, Queeries aims to offer a space for LGBTIQ+ writers and readers to meet and share work, bypassing the need to explain who they are. It’s also a rare opportunity to see leading creatives try something new, with comedians going heartfelt, columnists going comedic and artists going whichever way they please.

Featuring singer-songwriter Montaigne, drag artist Etcetera Etcetera, memoirist Bastian Fox Phelan, poet Freya Daly-Sadgrove, novelist Fiona Kelly McGregor, comedian Gen Fricker and screenwriter Vonne Patiag. Hosted by arts critic Jared Richards.

This event is part of Vivid Ideas' Human Nature series. Challenge the 'natural' ways of thinking, and explore the emerging new normals across sex, relationships, body politics, travel and more.

Update: Unfortunately, previous reader Michael Sun had to withdraw due to work commitments - but we're delighted to have Etcetera Etcetera join!
