Renzo Larriviere

Renzo Larriviere

Renzo is a sculptural artist from Lima, Peru. After studying sculpture at Pontificia Universidad Catolica Peru, he relocated to Australia to study Industrial Design at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), combining sculptural art and technology. With a keen eye for detail and a commitment to quality execution, he strives to create works that inspire and excite. In his new creative endeavour Chimera Atelier, he looks to incorporate and strengthen those same qualities in a more collaborative approach. Renzo has had work featured at Vivid Sydney since 2012, both as a collective and independently. His work has been exhibited across the globe, most recently in Taiwan, New Zealand, Colombia, Singapore and Chile.

Tim Hurricane Bestman

Tim Hurricane Bestman

Artist and industrial designer Tim 'Hurricane' Bestman fulfilled childhood dreams with his first paying gig in the entertainment industry 17 years ago – making lightsabers for Star Wars! Since then, he has remained an unstoppable force, working all over Australia and in New York and Holland.

With a career that spans film, TV, theatre, music videos, festivals, art installations, pyrotechnics and events, there is no facet of creative arts that this artist and designer hasn’t been involved in first hand. With each project, Hurricane aims to create immersive and interactive experiences that engage and excite audiences.

During his illustrious career, Hurricane has worked alongside world renowned artists to create work for some of New York City’s most famous landmarks including the Guggenheim Museum, Times Square and The Rockefeller Centre.

Since returning to Sydney in 2012, Hurricane founded XYZ Dimensions which delivers comprehensive technical design and art direction, with a focus on stage design for music and arts festivals. Hurricane has designed stages and decor for Australian festivals such as DefQon1, Burning Seed, The Town, Subsonic, Days Like This, Let Them Eat Cake and Regrowth. He has also worked with Opera Australia, the Lyric Theatre Sydney and designed and produced a stage in Holland for DefQon1 Netherlands.

Utilising a wide range of materials and processes suitable for outdoor permanent and semi-permanent installations, Hurricane likes to incorporate disregarded industrial waste into his works minimizing waste streams and promoting sustainability wherever possible.

Simon Grimes

Simon Grimes

A graduate of UTS Sydney, Simon Grimes is an architect with several years’ experience in the design and fabrication of architectural, sculptural and lighting installations. He sees these fields as interchangeable. Simon’s work often blurs the boundaries between disciplines depending on the nature of the project and whether it is permanent, temporary or ephemeral. While he uses modern LED technology in some installations, his work often involves the reuse or adaption of heritage artefacts, salvaged from the sites he is working on. He has been involved in Vivid Sydney since 2009 and exhibited his own installations in 2014, 2015 and 2019.

Anton Grimes

Anton Grimes

Anton is an industrial designer and graduate from UNSW. He has worked as a prototype and model maker at HASSELL Architects for five years and has nine years’ industrial design consulting experience as a founder of Chunk Design. Specializing in interactive design, Anton has worked on Vivid Sydney since its inception alongside installation work for commercial and marketing firms. His process often uses a large amount of experimentation with both technology and materials to realize innovative design outcomes.

Daniel Thomas

Daniel Thomas

Daniel has over 20 years in the design industry and specialises in digital media and post production. He holds a Bachelor of Built Environment (Industrial Design) and a GradDip (Industrial Design) from QUT. Daniel started his career as an industrial (product) designer in the automotive industry, then quickly moved to 3D visualisations. He has also taught these skills part time at QUT for nearly 15 years. On any given project, Daniel’s everyday toolkit includes 3D CAD, CAM, product and motion graphic design, traditional illustration, post production and software development. Most recently, Daniel has honed his motion graphic skills for projection graphics. His current focus is combining technology, media, and software to create unique interactive installations.

Event Details

Session 1: Intelligence is Now Artificial, But Your Co-Lab Should Be Real

Each individual artist in Vivid Sydney brings to the festival a unique set of creative skills and making abilities, from mechatronics to welding, engineering and coding to animation, illustration and lighting design. Vivid Sydney proves that incredible artists come from all manner of backgrounds and from places near and far. The festival also highlights that the best work evolves through collaboration. Almost every artwork in the festival is made by more than one person, and this session reveals the collaborative practices and processes used by some of Vivid Sydney's most prolific groups of artists to understand how they work together so well and why they do what they do.

This session provides an opportunity to meet artists* who have created work for every single Vivid Sydney since the festival’s inception including Simon and Anton Grimes and representatives from PropMill. You’ll meet the teams behind popular projections and light sculptures such as Goo!, FlipFlop, Watch Your Chips and many more.

Session 2: So You Want a Career in Light & Technology Sculpture?

Yes, you can have a career building robots that are five storeys tall! Meet the artists* behind some of the most popular works on the Vivid Sydney Light Walk including Renzo Larriviere, Tim 'Hurricane' Bestman and Adrienn Lord who have created light installations such as Robot SPACELand’s EcoBot at Darling Harbour, Regal Peacock, TORUS and immersive lighting experiences at Taronga Zoo and Barangaroo.

This session provides an opportunity to meet the artists behind Robot SPACELand’s 16metre tall EcoBot at Darling Harbour and the artists behind Regal Peacock, a giant kinetic bird, and TORUS, as well as the immersive lighting experiences at Taronga Zoo and Barangaroo. Come and discover that the artists in Vivid Sydney have each followed a unique road to build their individual careers. From mechatronics specialists and engineers to industrial designers and electricians, Vivid Sydney is proving that the great artists of our time haven’t necessarily gone to art school.
