Vivid Light is a family friendly event, viewed by people of all ages from around the world. All work submitted for consideration as part of Vivid Sydney must be suitable for General Exhibition, and must not bring the NSW Government and Destination NSW into disrepute.

Please note that the supply of projection and technical equipment and services has been contracted for Vivid Sydney 2021 and is not part of this opportunity.

Projection Art

In 2021, we want to do things a little differently.

Vivid Sydney is known for its spectacular light projections on iconic buildings. This year, Vivid Sydney is calling for projection artists to make their mark by considering new and often unused buildings, sculptural objects, ground surfaces, overhead screens or tunnels along the famous Light Walk.

Projection art is fundamental to the Vivid Sydney experience and the festival has a long established reputation for pushing the creative and technical boundaries of 3D projection mapping. Encouraging artists to explore the limits of current technology is at the core of Vivid Sydney’s curatorial philosophy.

We are looking for big ideas and we invite you to be as creative as possible in your proposal. Animators, artists, designers and projectionists are invited to submit their concept together with a suggested site or building. A successful proposal can be assigned to any building (or alternative surface) if deemed curatorially appropriate by the Vivid Sydney team.

Application Requirements

To apply you will need to provide the following:

  • A design concept brief and three design samples
  • Individual or company credentials and examples of previous designs
  • Fully itemised projection mapped design and animation fee (6-8 minute animation content)
  • Completed Application Form.

Selection Criteria

  • Creative and artistic merit, including demonstrated innovative and creative use of new technologies
  • Technical feasibility, including demonstrated ability to realise design, with a high-quality finished product
  • Cost-effectiveness, and capacity to deliver within the proposed fee/cost
  • Robustness and weather proofing within design and budget
  • Accessibility
  • Sustainable practice within the design, manufacture, delivery and decommissioning phases of activation

Light Installations

Light Installations

Light artists, designers, creative industry practitioners, architects, engineers and businesses are encouraged to submit a proposal for new Light Installations for the Vivid Sydney Light Walk 2021. All Light Installations should explore an engaging idea or thematic concept while also employing light as a primary interest of the work.

Successful works will demonstrate a unique experience of light, new technology, sustainability, accessibility and innovative thinking.

Theme / Concept

Vivid Light supports the development of work, which is underpinned by a conceptual purpose. Artists are encouraged to explore a concept or idea of their own interest.

Accessibility & Inclusion

Destination NSW is committed to keeping Vivid Sydney accessible to everyone. Applicants are encouraged to consider universal design principles in the development of all submissions, considering the elderly, parents with small children and those living with a temporary or permanent disability. You may wish to consider designing accessible features to provide sensory, auditory or visual interactivity options.

Sustainability

As Australia’s largest event, Vivid Sydney is actively working towards the delivery of a more sustainable event. As a festival that champion’s creativity, innovation and cutting-edge applications of technology, our vision is to become industry leaders in the delivery of sustainable events of an international scale. Demonstrating how you have incorporated sustainable practices into each stage of your installation’s design, construction, transportation, operation and decommissioning, is encouraged.

Durability

Installations designed for Vivid Sydney must be weather-proof, and able to last for the full duration of the event (including bump in/out) with minimal upkeep. If your installation is interactive, ensure the interactive elements are sufficiently robust and can operate safely in adverse weather conditions. Artists will be expected to maintain their work at a high level of aesthetic quality and functionality throughout the entire duration of the event.

Engineering & Insurance

Destination NSW will support successful applicants by providing engineering services and allowing Artists to opt in to facilitated insurance products (where required) for each Installation. Applicants do not need to include the cost of these services in their submission budgets. Successful applicants will be required to work collaboratively with Destination NSW and their nominated third-party suppliers to provide the necessary documentation to ensure these services are delivered to the required standard on agreed timelines.

Location Selection

You may propose a preferred or suggested location as part of your submission, however, the Vivid Sydney team reserves the right to stipulate the location of all artworks.

Placement of installations in all locations is subject to approval by Vivid Sydney, landowners, regulatory bodies and other stakeholders. Please do not approach building or land-owners directly.

Noise Considerations

Please be aware that sound restrictions exist in many areas across Vivid Sydney. Applications including a sound component are widely encouraged, but please be aware that landowners, regulatory bodies and other stakeholders will be considered when on-site decibel levels are established.

Artists are encouraged to create new music/sound design specific to their work. Permissions and necessary royalty licences for any/all music included in a Vivid Light installation or sculpture is the responsibility (and cost) of the artist.
