Blasting out of the local punk rock scene, all-female garage group The Buoys have been tearing it up around town. In just a few short years together, the indie four piece – bassist Courtney Cunningham, lead guitarist Hilary Geddes, drummer Tess Wilkin, and rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist Zoe Catterall – have unleashed three killers EPs, a handful of instantly memorable singles, and played sold-out live shows that have earned them a devoted following. For their very first Sydney Opera House and Vivid LIVE performance, The Buoys will play one night in the Utzon Room – and it’s set to be a big one.
Powered by hard-charging rhythms, fuzzed-out guitars and a dose of defiant attitude, The Buoys take the spirit of their forebears – from ’80s punk to ’90s riot-grrrl – and infuse them with millennial anxiety, railing against the expectations of a flawed society. The approach paid off in their debut EP Soft Boy (2018), its follow-up All This Talking Gets Us Nowhere (2020), and last year’s punchy, personal Unsolicited Advice for Your DIY Disaster, which yielded the triple j Hottest 100 smash ‘Lie To Me Again’.
