'Energetic, elastic, experimental' – Sydney Morning Herald
In a whirlwind five years with two Grammy nominations, multiple world tours, and nods from Erykah Badu, Questlove and Prince, Melbourne future-soul quartet Hiatus Kaiyote have finally broken through at home – making their Opera House debut accompanied by Sydney's poet-rapping favourite Sampa the Great and visual effects from Timeboy.
Melding electric jazz virtuosity with the beat-making dexterity of Flying Lotus and Madlib, Hiatus Kaiyote are a band born for the stage. Self-described as 'multi-dimensional, polyrhythmic gangster, singer-guitarist Nai Palm leads with her soul-driven force that unites r 'n' b lovers, hip-hop heads and heavy music fans alike.
Augmented with an expanded live line-up featuring three backing vocalists, core instrumentalists Paul Bender (bass), Simon Mavin (keyboards) and drummer Perrin Moss display a dazzling unity where improvised flourishes run free with chart-ready melodies.
Performing their first show amidst sword swallowers, fire twirlers and a gypsy death-core band in 2011, Hiatus Kaiyote have only deepened their singular vision while leading a new scene. A local rarity that conquered America before growing their own Australian underground following, the genre-bending group now make their largest statement in Sydney with local rap-soul champion Sampa the Great in a singular stand at Vivid LIVE.
