Almost half of single young men and women in Japan are virgins. Up to 70 per cent of millennials aren’t in a relationship but their desire to marry remains strong. In a country where birth rates are crashing, the stats have been blamed on everything from anime to porn and women not pulling their weight. Award-winning journalist and broadcaster Marc Fennell and producer Claire Aird travelled to Tokyo to get the real story behind the population crisis and made some surprising discoveries. Their SBS documentary Sex in Japan: Dying for Company is a fresh look at a disturbingly old problem.
In Japanese, the word karoshi literally means death from overwork. In the 2018 financial year, 190 people officially died or attempted suicide due to karoshi. Is there a correlation between overwork, loneliness, the dating games and ‘dying for company’? It is too simplistic to blame the falling birth rate solely on work conditions however it is certainly one of the factors at play. Marc and Claire investigate changing notions of femininity, rise of the sex industry and a breakdown in social relationships as well as the societal consequences. Their findings are alarming, and not limited to Japan.
