Event Details

Dappled Cities present ||||| (pronounced Five), their most epic album and performance to date. Combining their trademark layered soundscape with an immersive lighting spectacle, ||||| sees the band reimagining music from their highly acclaimed career and showcasing material from their stunning new album.

In collaboration with Sydney-based Studio Days and featuring works from Californian artist Paul Juno, the one-off concert event will feature imagery taken from the band’s rich visual history, accompanying the characteristic ethereal melodies and textures that have made Dappled Cities one of the most beloved indie bands to emerge from Sydney over the past two decades.

Over their career, Dappled Cities have forged a path that has distinctly been their own, releasing four critically hailed albums and playing festivals in Australia and internationally, including standout shows at Laneway, Splendour In The Grass and SXSW. Dappled Cities worked with members of the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra for the Sydney Festival, combining Baroque instrumentation with synthesisers and guitars for a rare extravaganza at Sydney Town Hall.

The new album IIIII sees the band return after the longest wait between records in their 18-year career. Tapping into the timeless qualities of 70s mavericks like David Bowie and the laid-back charm of modern giants like Grizzly Bear, they have created songs that sound mature but undeniably sexy. Recorded in the serene surrounds of Byron Bay, IIIII is a return to the textural, expansive sounds of Dappled Cities’ early records, dialing back on the propulsive stomp of previous albums and settling into an easy, transfixing groove that is no less danceable, but allows the band’s knack for melody to shine through. The band now make their most ambitious play yet in this singular event at City Recital Hall for Vivid LIVE.
