YARD ILLUMINATIONS

Event Details

As a part of Vivid Sydney 2015, Robin Clare & ‘Story Yard’ have teamed up together to present YARD ILLUMINATIONS, 4th June 6.00pm, celebrating a night of Jamaican inspired art, music and culture located in Sydney’s underground bunker at PLAY BAR. YARD ILLUMINATIONS will explore pivotal cultural aspects of the largest Caribbean Island of Jamaica, and reveal how reggae and dancehall music have not only been widely embraced but evolved in contemporary Australia.

The night will play host to a new exhibition of works from Jamaican born artist Robin Clare (now a Bondi resident). Robin is famed for producing yardystyle prints depicting the full catalogue of distinctive Dancehall dance moves from ‘Dutty Wine’ to ‘Pon Di River’. In joining with Vivid Sydney 2015, this event will feature Robin Clare’s first foray into experimentations with light. Expect to see luminescent dancing figures gracing the walls at Playbar!

YARD ILLUMINATIONS also celebrates the launch of ‘Story Yard’ a digital space created and produced by Sydney’s own Louis Basslines (founding member of one of Sydney’s most loved reggae events ‘Dutty Dancing’) . The new web space will showcase inspiring videodocumentary stories from musicians and artists based around the globe, including the likes of reggae superstar Mikey Jarrett, New York City dance crew ‘Blackgold NYC’ and Melbourne sound system operator Stryka D.

This night will bring music, dance and art worlds together, as Sydney celebrates Jamaican culture downunder. Expect to see live performances from 101 Doll Squadron who will bruk out on the dance floor, the heaviest in Dancehall and Reggae tunes from Basslines and other local talent such as ‘Lordz of the Fly’ and ‘MOGz and Kye’. What to bring? Your dancing shoes!
