Milliner & Teacher
Rick McGill is one of Australia’s most respected milliners with a lifetime of experience. Although personally, Rick admits he’s partial to a cap, he has created spectacular hats for film, stage and couture, including Nicole Kidman’s headdresses in Moulin Rouge. Other cinematic credits include King Kong, Queen of the Damned as well as Star Wars Episode 2 and Star Wars Episode 3.
He has been a mainstay at Opera Australia, the Sydney Theatre Company and Bell Shakespeare with his onstage hats appearing in My Fair Lady, The King & I, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, The Tempest and Romeo and Juliet. Commercially, Rick’s work has featured in Guys and Dolls, The Phantom of the Opera, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Love Never Dies and Monkey…Journey to the West. Most recently, Rick’s work appears in Disney’s Aladdin. He is currently working on several projects, including cruise ship spectaculars and yet to be released movie productions.
He has lectured in Fashion Millinery, Theatre Millinery and Hard and Soft Sculptured Costume for more than 35 years, most notably in Adelaide’s CPA & TAFE NSW Ultimo. Whilst establishing a Bridal Wear business, Rick fell into millinery in the sixties and studied the craft at the famed Emily McPherson college in Melbourne, a craft he further pursued in Adelaide. Rick is a master of colour and materials and manages to merge the very different demands of opera, stage and fashion to create a work with an incredible feel of its own.
