Vivid School gives students the opportunity to lift the lid on the largest festival of Light, Music and Ideas in the Southern Hemisphere – Vivid Sydney.
Entertainment Industry Program
In 2020, students attending the Vivid School – Entertainment Industry program will dive into Australia’s largest event, undertaking technical operations and logistical planning for one of Vivid Sydney’s key Light installations.
The Vivid School – Entertainment Industry program is for students enrolled in Stage 6 and addresses key competencies in staging, safety, live music production, audio, lighting and working in the entertainment industry, covering events in both indoor venues and outdoor environments.
Students will gain firsthand experience in developing risk assessments, event logistics plans, operational planning and situational considerations required for a major public art activation. They will also accrue a collection of HSC ready case studies and resources.
As a festival that welcomes more than 2.4 million attendees annually, safety and customer satisfaction are among the highest priorities for the Vivid Sydney curatorial and operations team when planning the Vivid Light Walk. Spanning over three kilometres the Vivid Light Walk features dozens of unique light art installations, all with different technical requirements and a unique impact on the audience.
Vivid School – Entertainment Industry students will have the opportunity to plan the installation and execution of one of this year’s key pieces, receiving the technical plans and example risk assessments associated with the piece to assist in their preparation. A handbook outlining activities and providing templates will be available to teachers in mid-March 2020.
This course also offers insights into the music industry from members of the Sydney Opera House Contemporary Music and Production teams, sharing how they bring the annual Vivid LIVE program to life. Students will learn about talent requirements, technical production, venue management and the skills and experience required to work on an acclaimed music program at Sydney’s most iconic performing arts venue.
This practical course provides a unique, real-life case study for students to understand the complexities and challenges in event management and technical planning, with feedback and actual outcomes explained by the team behind Vivid Sydney.
It is also a rare opportunity for students to hear directly from the experts about pathways to work in the entertainment and events industry, including on one of the world's most acclaimed festivals.
