Taronga Zoo

Location
Taronga Zoo, Bradleys Head Rd, Mosman NSW 2088

25 May – 16 June / 5.30pm – 9.30pm

Vivid Sydney at Taronga Zoo is shining a light on conservation and the wonders of wildlife this year. More than 100 artists, animators, musicians, technicians, electrical engineers and lighting designers have worked together for over 3,376 hours to create a captivating, inspiring and educational interactive experience for all ages. This has culminated in a spectacular display of light sculptures throughout the grounds of Taronga Zoo Sydney that showcase some of the most stunning but endangered wildlife from ocean, bush and forest habitats.

Guests will step through a marine world to meet some of NSW’s most endangered aquatic species and emerge from the mouth of a Port Jackson shark as it splashes through the facade of Taronga’s heritage entrance. Tread quietly through the Sumatran jungle to encounter endangered and ferocious animals along the way before stepping into our Taronga Centenary Theatre to behold a multi award-winning animated film, presented here as a 270-degree cinematic experience. Pause a while and rest beneath a canopy of stars and glowing planet earth as imagined by children, before a final journey through an illuminated Australian bushscape that takes everyone all the way home again.

Focussing on children, the next generation who hold the key to the future of wildlife, Taronga has invited young school students to design some of this year’s Vivid Sydney lanterns. The illustrations they have drawn have been brought to life a larger-than-life visual representation of how the next generation relate to wildlife. These are emphasised by soundscapes throughout the zoo grounds recorded by children sharing their poignant thoughts and feelings about what nature is.

In addition, guests at Vivid Sydney at Taronga Zoo will marvel at the giant multimedia light sculptures including the majestic Sumatran tiger, an epic goanna, a school of blue devil fish, a giant bilby and many others. This combination of Taronga’s breathtakingly incredible installations and light sculptures tell a fascinating yet hopeful tale of wildlife and environmental conservation, and the role guests can play to join us and take action to save these beautiful animals from extinction over the next 10 years.

To make a real impact on guest’s attitudes towards wildlife, Taronga invites guests to step into a world of scientific discovery and make a pledge to wildlife conservation by tying a glowing ribbon from one of three amazing yet fragile habitats; the ocean, bush or forest. In doing so, our guests will themselves transform Taronga Zoo Sydney into a light for the wild.
