Kings Cross

26 May–17 June / Various times

Kings Cross and Darlinghurst venues come alive as a centre of performance art, ‘Avant/Cabaret’, with a cutting-edge independent theatre and a bohemian flavor.

Vivid KX will explore the bohemian underworlds that gave The Cross its unique DNA through a genre-bending performance program; pop-up cinema screening the strangest, craziest and best in Australian film; and raw and riveting talks of the days of the ‘Golden Mile’.

For the first time at Kings Cross, the Coca-Cola billboard will come alive to celebrate the talent, colour, creativity and diversity of Kings Cross. Shot by portrait photographer Katherine Williams the Characters of Kings Cross series will feature moving black-and-white portraits of the individuals that make Kings Cross so special. The projected images will feature on the left-hand side of the sign, and will include familiar faces such as Kylie Kwong, along with other Kings Cross locals.

The famous Coca-Cola LED billboard will for the first time in 40 years transform into a continuous light show of vibrant colours and special effects for the entire 23 nights of Vivid Sydney.

Welcome to Kings Cross will take over the Kings Cross Hotel on the first Saturday of Vivid Sydney, with a full complement of over 20 musical artists and performers.

Enjoy the infamous Dive Bar which will feature a ‘genre-bending, multidisciplinary, music-art and performance program’ for three nights a week; and also host a Pop-Up Festival of the ‘Strangest, Craziest and Bestest’ in Australia Cinema for the last fifty years.

Across the road, Hidden Sydney – The Glittering Mile will return to the World Bar. Dedicated to the Heroes and Villains, Poets, Drag Queens, Witches and Silver Spade Crooners who called KX their home, Hidden Sydney sold out two hugely popular seasons last year and returns for a limited time in Vivid 2017 – accompanied by Kings Bloody Cross – a curated season of raw and riveting ‘in conversation events’ featuring the KX luminaries of that Golden Age.

Coca-Cola is a proud Vivid Precinct Contributor, with the famous KX Coca-Cola sign coming to life through an interactive experience at Vivid KX.
