Created by Sydney-based ANL Design, ‘Sensitive’ is an installation that explores our desire for genuine human connection and relationships in the digital media age.

Humans are undeniably social animals. Across many studies, the data suggests that we are deeply shaped by our social bonds and suffer greatly when they are threatened or severed. Loneliness is in fact so profound that it can permanently change our brains and neurochemistry. But this innate human desire to connect has had to adapt in recent decades, in the rise of the digital age. The pandemic has forced many of us to rely far more on technology and devices to connect with one another, which in turn has exacerbated the side effects of excessive digital communication.

Sensitive features a series of life-size figures frozen in ‘connective’ poses, trapped within light frames, distanced from one another. Each figure yearns for intimacy and connection, stretching the confines of their space, reaching out into the void and towards one another. The series of geometries that frame these figures fit together like jigsaw pieces; symbolic of the way that we humans belong together in one tribe and social unity.

The installation comes to life in vivid displays of light and sound triggered by motion sensors. Their intensity mirrors the movement and life around them. The soundscape is one of chatter, in different languages of human connection. Sensitive explores the idea of what genuine human connection is and whether the rapidly accelerating technologies and devices in our lives are sufficient substitutes to the feelings of being physically embraced, emotionally understood and supported by other human beings.

ANL Design is a collective of artists, technicians and makers who explore design as a medium for more than the superficial. Instead, they wield this finely-tuned instrument to question social paradigms and introduce new ideas. As creators of innovative public light installations and art activation's, ANL has exhibited in Vivid Sydney since 2018 with popular works including Closer, Let It Snow, Harmony and Nostalgia Above.
