Journalist Jenny Valentish has been dancing around the void for decades, first in bars, then in the boxing ring as a Muay Thai amateur fighter. Everything Harder Than Everything Else is her fourth book, cementing her as a key voice in immersive non-fiction. On more sedate days, she contributes to The Guardian, ABC and The Monthly.

Australian wrestling legend Alex Mann, aka KrackerJak, has faced many foes, from former WWE Superstars to feared indie legends. He takes ill-advised sojourns into deathmatch wrestling, wielding wild home-cobbled weapons and being struck by more of the same, including the rogue DVD player that put him out of action for a few years. While he recovered, KrackerJak was forced to find inventive new outlets to maintain his sanity.

Have you ever wondered what drives those people who don’t know when to stop?

When Jenny Valentish wrote Woman of Substances, a book about addiction, she became intrigued by those who push the boundaries of endurance. Her new book, Everything Harder Than Everyone Else, meets people who go hell-for-leather in their physical pursuits, no matter what the cost to their bodies.

There’s the bare-knuckle boxer who swots up on her opponents to better leave blood spatters on the canvas. The ultra-runner warding off depression by forever plotting his next annihilating race. The neuroscientist violating his brain to override his disgust response. The porn star for whom sex and violence are two sides of the same coin. The dancer who can’t separate her identity from her practice until at death’s door. The bodybuilder who exacts order on a life that was once pure chaos.

In this conversation, Jenny is joined by Australian wrestling legend KrackerJak and together they explore the art of suffering – and whether there could be constructive societal and personal outcomes from pushing the self to the extreme.
