Six Vivid Sydney Activities For Kids

From 26 May to 17 June, Vivid Sydney will be taking over the city’s most famous landmarks with a range of installations and events for the whole family. Here are some of the highlights for activities and installations for kids, young and old, at this year’s Vivid Sydney festival. 
Lights For The Wild at Taronga Zoo
Lights for the Wild will showcase gigantic animal light sculptures for an experience for the whole family. Each of the glimmering, multimedia installations has an important story to tell about conservation—they symbolise the 10 species that Taronga Zoo is dedicated to saving from extinction. Lights for the Wild will show for two sessions each evening throughout the festival.

First session: 5.30pm – 7.30pm
Second session: 7.30pm – 9.30pm
{Kids/Code/Create} is an interactive project which ams to help kids understand and have fun with coding. Learn alongside your child and spend the day building amazing digital creations using Scratch, Makey Makey and Raspberry Pi boards. Using light and music, Code Club Australia will teach children how to work together and experiment with design and coding.

Vivid Sydney at The Rocks
Take your kids to The Rocks and get involved in some of the interactive light installations at Vivid Sydney. Enjoy staring into the deep unknown at the Portholes exhibition, where the scenery is subject to change, or play schoolyard games with a twist at Electric Hopscotch. If your kid is a natural performer, don’t miss MUSICbox, a fun musical experience that takes your movements and turns them into wonderful colours and melodies.

sARTorial: Fun With Wearable Electronics for Kids 8-12 Years
Head a little further west to Rhodes for a day of fun, interactive learning for children aged 8 to 12 years old. dLux Media Arts will be on hand to teach little ones how to make cool cardboard costumes and paper prototypes which can then be programmed to light up with LEDs. sARTorial lets children learn about coding, programming and design in a fun workshop environment.

4 June, 10am - 1pm
Future Making for Kids
Future Making for Kids is a hands-on workshop for kids aged 9 to 12. The session investigates human-centred design in an exciting environment, and encourages children to process information like a designer; interviewing, observing, reflecting on feedback and sketching to develop a prototype. Participants also get to take home a cool prototype of their invention!

3 June, 9am - 11am
Vivid Sydney at the Royal Botanic Garden
Take your kids on a early evening walk through Vivid Sydney’s Royal Botanic Garden and discover beautiful light shows for all ages. Walk through the shimmering Electric Forest, and catch a glimpse of the glowing Birds of Lumos installation. The BIG RED BUTTON is a fun, interactive light sculpture that holds a powerful message about our environment, while the You Lookin’ At Me? installation is made up of five unblinking eyeballs sprawled across the lawn. Kids will also love the Sunflowers, a row of gorgeous, solar-powered light sculptures that surround the gardens.

Light Bounce 
Further north, in the Chatswood precinct, Light Bounce is an interactive collection of multicoloured totems made for Vivid Sydney’s youngest spectators. Guests of all ages will enjoy watching the light bounce from totem to totem as they reflect off each other and the everyday surroundings of Chatswood Chase. The installation will be open each day throughout the festival, with the lights staying on until 9pm on Thursdays.
