Sustainable and environmentally conscious design has become an increasingly important area of innovation for the architecture profession globally.

One of Australia’s most sustainable tall buildings will serve as a setting for the world's largest festival of Light, Music and Ideas.

Sustainable and environmentally conscious design has become an increasingly important area of innovation for the architecture profession globally, creating healthy and energising environments to work, live and engage with.

1 Bligh, designed in partnership between Architectus and Ingenhoven Architects of Germany, is the first 6-Star Green Star high-rise in Sydney and was developed to maximise all of the natural resource available to achieve a 5 Star NABERS Energy Rating. Consuming half the energy of a standard tower, the on-site black-water treatment system recycles 90 per cent of the building waste water. We have also tapped into the city sewer and treat 100,000 litres a day which replaces the need for fresh water resources in the building’s cooling towers, the green wall and toilet flushings. Solar thermal panels generate cooling through an absorption chiller alongside natural gas for the tri-generation plant.

But it is the architectural use of light and air that makes this building truly unique and also a wonderful space to work in. A naturally ventilated glass atrium running the full height of the building enhances connectivity and gives access to natural light and fresh air.

The double-skin façade works to naturally disperse light and the cavity between the inner and outer layers of glass contains a fully automated blind that aligns with the angle of the sun. The blinds provide optimum solar control and daylight reflectance while maintaining views. This ensures light flow, protects from glare, and also limits greenhouse effects through less energy consumption in air conditioning.

1 Bligh has been designed with the future of our cities and planet front of mind.
