Vivid Sydney is back for another year of light, ideas and music that will delight and surprise spectators from Sydney and around the world. Vivid’s Light events are a highlight of the festival, filling Sydney’s landmarks with colour in a celebration of art, community and technology. Check out these 10 must-see light displays and start planning your itinerary for Vivid Sydney 2017.

Lights for the Wild, Taronga Zoo

Held at Taronga Zoo on every evening of Vivid Sydney, Lights for the Wild showcases massive animal light sculptures, each with an important story to tell about conservation. The display promises to be even bigger than its debut last year, and guests will get the chance to take part in a fully immersive show. Look for limited-release Blue Pass tickets for your chance to join the Sky Safari, Taronga Zoo’s incredible cable car experience. From here, you can see the lights of Vivid Sydney from high above and get a unique view of the illuminated zoo.

Magicians of the Mist, Darling Harbour

Every night during Vivid Sydney, Magicians of the Mist will appear through the fog at Darling Harbour. A collaboration between Oracle Liquid, The Electric Canvas, and Vivid Sydney, this dazzling display combines the forces of artists, engineers, fountaineers and pyrotechnicians to create a spectacular show on the waters of Cockle Bay. The performance brings together art and technology in an amazing display incorporating 40-metre-high light projections, lasers, searchlights, fireworks, and water fountains up to 50 metres high. InSIGHT, The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney

Located in The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, InSIGHT is a digital representation of the human face portrayed on a huge, low-fidelity display. InSIGHT projects a range of animated facial images and explores changes in expression, gender and character. Programmable LEDs woven through the installation will give those directly in front a sharp view of the animation’s mechanics, while glowing like embers when viewed from surrounding angles.

Tidal, City and Surrounds

From artists Peter Thompson and Reuben Young comes Tidal, a mesmerising piece which illustrates the history of Sydney. This 3D installation uses sound and light above Loftus Lane in the CBD to recreate Sydney’s dramatic transformation from pre-colonial times to the present day. The artists use a range of live audio samples and immersive lights to narrate Sydney’s colourful history, from spellbinding Dreamtime stories to the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House.

AXIOM, The Rocks

AXIOM is an abstract sculpture which brings together light, geometrics, music and animation to challenge perceptions of physical and virtual space. Created by artist Kit Webster, AXIOM uses huge, illuminated archways to blur the lines between illumination and form. AXIOM Proudly Sponsored by American Express will be on display throughout the festival and promises to bring an intriguing and sensory experience to the heart of The Rocks.

MUSICbox, The Rocks

For an updated look at an ex heritage building, head to The Rocks to see MUSICbox take over Cadman’s Cottage. Created by artists and producers Propaganda Mill, MUSICbox will transform Cadman’s Cottage into an interactive, immersive music space that turns your dance moves into light and colour. Each night of Vivid Sydney, MUSICbox will feature four stages with interactive keyboards that create both audio and visual representations of each note you play!

Trapdoor, Barangaroo (South)

Trapdoor is a mind-boggling optical illusion set to impress Barangaroo (South) crowds during Vivid Sydney. Created by Sydney’s Spinifex Group and Vivid Sydney veteran Jason French, Trapdoor will have visitors hanging onto their hats as the ground ‘opens up’ below them. The mysterious subterranean world will be brought to life by floor murals which create ever-changing scenes to delight and confound Vivid Sydney visitors. Trapdoor will be open every evening throughout Vivid Sydney 2017.

The Sunflowers, The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney

Artists Francesco Cappuccio and Dutchanee Ongarjsiri will bring their sparkling light sculptures The Sunflowers to Sydney for this year’s Vivid Sydney festival. These solar-powered sunflower installations will stand tall and line the path that surrounds The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney throughout the festival. The Sunflowers soak up the sun during the day, then use this stored energy to welcome nighttime visitors to the gardens with a bow.

You Lookin’ at Me?, The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney

Keep an eye out for the You Lookin’ at Me? installation in The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. Open each evening of Vivid Sydney, this installation is made up of five giant eyeballs which interact with Vivid Sydney guests by following their movements as they pass by. You Lookin’ at Me? was created by Tropism Art and Science Collective and has featured at several light festivals around the world in countries including Singapore and Netherlands.

Birds of Lumos, The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney

Catch the glowing Birds of Lumos in the The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney during Vivid Sydney. Created by artists amigo and amigo, the two brightly-lit birds (‘Rowi’ the kiwi and her baby chick) will help to shed some light on the endangered status of the rare Rowi Kiwi. The curious Birds of Lumos will react to gathering visitors, glowing different colours and even activating a dazzling ‘charge’ sequence when they sense danger.

Freedom of Movement, The Rocks

Inspired by inventor Henry Ford’s famous vision, “to change the way the world moves,” Freedom of Movement is a speeding swing light installation. Combining light, colour and motion, the swings come to life and create a dazzling display. Sparked by Ford, the engaging installation invites you to join in the fun in an interactive, immersive experience.

Museum of Contemporary Art, The Rocks

The MCA will play host to a range of Vivid Sydney events this year. The Organic Vibrations light display will cover the front of the building, with colourful, morphing images. Created by Australian artist Julia Gorman and Parisian artistic collective Danny Rose, the installation uses projection mapping to transform the museum. Inside, the MCA will host a variety of Vivid Sydney Ideas conferences as well as holding live music shows every Saturday and Sunday in the Vivid Lounge.
